MARK HAS NOW RETURNED HOME
Twelve weeks ago Mark was his usual chipper self, full of fishing stories about ‘the one that got away’, BBQ’ing for England and dishing out Kung Fu punches left right and centre.
He started getting pins and needles that crept up his body which got up to his throat and was diagnosed with a rare neurological condition called ‘Guillain-Barré syndrome’ (GBS).
Thankfully GBS is rare and only effects 1 in every 100,000 people but it’s a serious autoimmune condition. Your body’s own immune system mistakenly attacks your healthy nerves system and basically breaks down your body.
Mark’s symptoms spread really fast, and the prognosis was not good, so he went straight into ICU at The Princess Royal hospital in Haywards Heath where he has been receiving invasive medical treatment ever since. He’s currently sedated and has had a tracheostomy, he can’t talk but he can definitely hear us.
There's no known cure for GBS, but there are treatments that ease symptoms. Mark is a fighter and we remain hopeful that he will beat this devastating condition but what we don’t know is how well and how quickly his nerves will recover.
He may struggle with his mobility, dexterity and strength for a long time and for such an active person this will be especially tough. Who knows Mark knows he would never ask for help, but this not a normal situation and we simply don’t know what the future holds. We do know it will be a long road and there are no guarantees so I am raising funds to support him with whatever he needs during his recovery and rehabilitation however long that takes.
Reality is tough and it’s terrifying to say but here goes - although most people recover completely from GBS, some severe cases can be fatal and, should the worst happen, all the money raised here will be donated to the ICU at The Princess Royal hospital in Haywards Heath in thanks for the wonderful care and attention they are giving Mark.
I know times are tough for everyone but any help, support or donations you could afford at this time to get this Brother, Husband, Dad, Grandad, Uncle and all round tough guy back to full health would be greatly appreciated.
