Help Mary and Gabriel Dorsey Restore their lives After fire
My beloved Aunt Mary's home on Las Flores Drive in Altadena has been reduced to ashes. This wasn't just any house - it was our family's heart since 1972. The tragedy couldn't have struck at a worse time. My aunt suffered a devastating stroke last year that left her right side paralyzed, and both she and my cousin Gabriel rely on wheelchairs to move around.
When the fire broke out, they were nearly trapped inside without a wheelchair-accessible van. Thank God another family member reached them in time, but the experience shows just how crucial proper transportation is for their safety. They lost everything - not just their belongings, but all the careful modifications they'd made to help them live independently.
Here's what they urgently need:
My Aunt Mary's Electric Wheelchair ($37,000)
She can't use her current manual wheelchair because of her paralysis. Without an electric wheelchair, she has no independence or mobility.
A Safe Way to Get Around ($50,000-$80,000)
A wheelchair-accessible van with all necessary modifications - ramp, hand controls, lowered floor, and secure tie-downs - will ensure they're never in danger again and can reach medical appointments.
A Place to Call Home
They're in temporary accessible housing, but the daily costs are overwhelming. We need to find them a stable, wheelchair-friendly home.
We've raised about $20,000 of our initial $30,000 goal. However, after assessing the true costs of the wheelchair, van, and housing, we've updated our goal to $120,000.
Every dollar brings them closer to independence. If you can't donate, please share their story. The support so far has meant everything to our family during this devastating time. My Aunt Mary and Gabriel have always been there for others - now they need our help.
With deep gratitude,
Kasani Freeman
P.S. To everyone who has already helped - thank you. Would you consider sharing their story to help us reach more caring people?
