Help Mary Ann fight ALS!

Mary Ann Babinger was diagnosed with ALS in November of 2021. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a nervous system disease that weakens muscles and impacts physical function. In this disease, nerve cells break down, which reduces functionality in the muscles they supply. The cause of ALS is unknown and will eventually lead to paralysis and early death, usually by respiratory failure. ALS is generally diagnosed between the ages of 40-70, making Mary Ann a sporadic case diagnosed at 69.
Mary Ann is a lifelong resident of Central NY, currently residing in Nedrow with her oldest son. She took early retirement from her job with the Onondaga Central School district, where she worked for 34 years, in April due to mobility concerns. She's been enjoying spending more time with her friends, four children and seven grandchildren.
Sadly, her mobility and fine motor skills have decreased since her diagnosis and her ability to talk clearly. She wears a leg brace to keep her steady and walks with the assistance of a cane. She needs to be on a ventilator at least six hours a day. She just recently had surgery to have a feeding tube inserted into her stomach since she's now unable to swallow food on her own. Mary Ann attends an ALS clinic at Upstate Hospital and participates in ALS research helping to test experimental treatments.
She appreciates all the support she has received from both the t-shirt sale and the jewelry fundraisers hosted for her earlier this year. Since then, she has had a ramp installed at her front door and paid for medical expenses. She'd also like to thank everyone for the medical supplies they have donated to her over recent months.
Mary Ann has expressed that she wants to stay in her home and be independent as long as possible. Her family is now trying to raise $9430 to retrofit her bathroom with an ADA shower. This would give Mary Ann the freedom to bathe herself daily without assistance. If we’re lucky enough to reach and possibly exceed our goal, we will use the overage for future medical expenses and needs. We foresee Mary Ann needing a motorized wheelchair and communication technology in the future. If you can donate, she'd like to thank you in advance for anything you can give.
