Help Matt Thibodeau Recover From Heart Surgery
Donation protected
Matt Thibodeau needs our help as he embarks on a difficult and uncertain recovery following heart surgery on May 15.
If you don't know Matt, he's been a staple of the Detroit music scene for many years as one of the most talented (and tallest) guitarists in the city. These days he's best known for playing alongside local legends like Melvin Davis, McKinley Jackson, Pat Lewis, Willie Jones, Joey Kingfish, Spyder Turner, Michael Henderson, and Wayne Kramer, but he's also performed in his own groups, like Gold Dollar vets Stunning Amazon, certified party band The Wrong Numbers, and B3 organ jazz outfit Soul Cycle. Over the years, he's also been a dedicated guitar teacher, and opened his home studio to many in the scene as a rehearsal space and meeting place, rarely requesting any type of compensation in return. There's no better time than now to finally give a little back to Matt.
In January 2021, he underwent his second emergency heart surgery to repair tears in his aorta, a complication of Marfan Syndrome. Marfan is a genetic condition that affects Matt's connective tissue. Though the previous surgery was successful, doctors discovered that there had been an aneurysm in the aorta, requiring this most recent 12-hour procedure on May 15 to repair the damage and prevent a future dissection, which could be fatal.
The prospect of multiple heart surgeries is daunting enough. Sadly, Matt has also been struggling with chronic pain as a direct result of these surgeries. It's been two-and-a-half years since he has been able to work consistently. It's unclear if/when he will be able to return to regular work, which makes our support today all the more vital.
Matt is a solid human being. He is one of the most charismatic and funniest dudes I know, but what really impresses me most (and don't tell him this, because he'll roast me for saying it) is his loyalty, kindness, and generosity. He may try to distract from these qualities with dry humor and relentless self-deprecation, but it's the truth. He is a good person and an even better friend. He doesn't deserve the hand he's been dealt. Please consider supporting him during this difficult time by donating whatever amount you are able—every dollar helps! And if you can't afford a monetary donation at this time, please contribute by sharing our campaign.
On behalf of Matt and his friends and family, thank you!
