Help Maya Rita afford a car!

Maya Rita is a mixed-race Chamorro woman living in LA. She's survived in LA without a car for the past four years, which has been no easy feat! After the pandemic hit, she left the restaurant industry, started a dog-walking business, and got sober. Growing this business is her central goal, and one she's been working hard towards.

In addition to walking dogs, Maya recently began driving for Lyft and Doordash in order to earn more income. To do this, she must pay for a rental from Lyft, but their rental contracts are very exploitative. It costs her over $900 each month for the car rental ALONE, not including gas. This means it takes at least two full workdays just to cover the rental, if not more. The financial strain has been intense, and she hardly ever takes a day off. Even working three gigs, it has been difficult for her to stay afloat, and saving up for her own car has been impossible.

Maya is someone who does it all with a smile, but the past six months have been a struggle. Those of us who love her dearly see the toll all this hustling is taking on her, and how scary and demoralizing her situation feels. After some heart-to-heart conversations and strategizing, we've decided this is a moment where it's time to ask our community for help. Let's pitch in and help Maya get some wheels of her own!

Our goal is to raise $4K by March 14th. This is also Maya's one-year anniversary of getting sober! The money will allow her to buy a cheap used car off Craigslist, so she can continue to grow her business, and drive for different gigs on the side. It will also allow her to get the HUGE strain of the monthly Lyft debt off her back, so she can make her way towards financial stability once again. It's been a year of difficult growth and work; help us ring in Maya's sober-versary by helping contribute to her car fund!
