Help Maya’s family recover from medical expenses.

Hello, Maya is an incredibly sweet and intelligent 18 year old, and an amazing older sister to 7-year old Vicky and 13-year old Bella, that has been facing hardships that no one should ever have to. On her winter break from Duke she unfortunately began to feel very ill and eventually had a seizure episode. This escalated into 2 more violent seizures and a long 3 week hospital stay. While in the hospital they performed countless tests in an attempt to find the cause of these episodes. She struggled every day having countless vials of blood drawn and many doctors constantly questioning her and performing tests. Even with all these extremely thorough tests no cause was found, but while in the hospital a cerebral aneurysm was found and she had to have a stent surgically implanted in her brain. Unfortunately, this has caused a break in her college career at Duke and she hasn’t been able to continue working towards becoming a doctor like she has dreamed of her whole life.

She eventually was released from the hospital but still suffered severe memory loss and forgot the 6 months prior to the hospital stay. Thankfully, she has been recovering but her life still consists of constant doctor appointments and ER visits everytime she has a serious memory lapse episode. Since no cause has been found her family spends every day finding specialists to run more tests in hopes of understanding what happened and making sure she can live a normal life and continue towards her dream of being a doctor.

Although it hasn’t necessarily gotten better, her family is just incredibly grateful that it hasn’t gotten worse. At the same time this whole ordeal has left her and her family with tens of thousands of dollars worth of medical bills from her hospital stay and from the constant appointments she must attend. Maya contributes as much as she can by working almost everyday as a waitress but sometimes the symptoms can become so overwhelming and cause her to have to take extended medical leave. They are trying their hardest to work towards these expenses but they would appreciate any help from others. Thank you to all for listening to her story and donating anything you are capable of — anything helps.
