Help Mazie Biswell Get The Medical Help She Needs

I am part of a fundraising effort to help one of our community’s favorite people, Mazie Biswell. She is experiencing a debilitating chronic gut illness and needs your help to afford the treatment she so desperately needs.

Let me give you some background…

In October 2021, Mazie noticed a new sensitivity to food and various physical discomforts, such as intense physical pain and digestive problems. She saw countless doctors and tirelessly monitored her diet, but her health kept on deteriorating. She became anemic, suffered malnutrition, and experienced intense anxiety and depression.

Finally, after many more doctor’s visits and research, Mazie was officially diagnosed with chronic Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO), Candida Overgrowth, and Leaky Gut Syndrome.

Any one of these on their own would be bad enough, but all three have developed into a chronic illness that makes it near impossible for her body to digest anything she eats. She is living on a mostly liquid diet and herbal supplements prescribed by her dietician.

There is some hope!

One of her doctors has prescribed an antibiotic called Xifaxan which will help purge the bad bacteria from her gut. BUT her insurance will not cover the 6-week course and the out-of-pocket cost is $6000.

Mazie is out of options. In her condition it is very difficult for her to work which has buried her more in medical debt. She is perpetually hungry, and her declining mental health has been directly linked to her malnutrition.

This is only step one of a long healing process. SIBO is aggressive and easy to relapse if you’re not careful. After antibiotics she will undergo more restrictive diets, testing, and lifestyle changes that will eventually lead to a more normal existence.

It’s not an easy task for Mazie to admit when she needs help, but those who love and support her have had enough of watching our healthcare system fail her over and over again.
