Hai i'm Tobias Roth, you better know me as Niran (or NiranV Dean) from Second Life.
The Story
As many you may know i've been struggling to get along for a long time, creating a Patreon page to allow me to keep working on what most of you will most likely know me for, my Second Life Viewer "Black Dragon". I hesitantly started with Patreon because i was left with no choice other than getting a job which would have ultimately meant the early end of Black Dragon, which was something neither me nor (i think the userbase) was willing to accept. A couple years ago i was sued for piracy twice by an infamously known company "Koch Media GmbH" (look it up) who likes to sue (and scare) people into paying their fines, we went through this for a long time and came to the conclusion that it would be best to defend against their claims. After a long battle with them we won one out of two cases both due to their unrealistic claims and their unwillingness to show any interest in their own case, often forgetting about it for months and only ever bringing it up the very last second before their claims would have timed out automatically netting us the win in these cases. Sadly i lost one case which faced me with a charge of 1500€ for the case (that they have been dragging on for so long for no reason)...
Today we got a letter telling us that we have not paid them yet, coming as a surprise seeing that that they have never sent a formal letter how much the final sum would be, when to pay it and to whom or how. Now that wouldn't be a big problem if it wasn't for another thing that came up. My parents have been holding back on a bill to pay back child money because we have been unable to pay all of this so far. Coming together at around 8000€ for both cases (1500€ for the sue and 6500€ for the child money case). With the Patreon money i have been saving up as much as i can at all times in case something bad would ever happen, for a case such as this. Sadly this is by far not enough. Managing to save up 1000€ this lowers the total amount still required down to 7000€ which is what was set as goal.
In addition to me saving up we'll be pulling all kinds of strings everywhere, we'll try to get something arranged to pay this off in instalments and scrape together everything we have.
At this time i have no idea when the payments are due (i hope not all too soon, leaving us no time) but i suspect it will be in the very foreseeable future.
Personal Notes
I'm also incredibly sad it had to come this far (personally i'd rather not do this) but i also don't want to leave any possible solution out at this point. I want to get over this as fast as possible and return to normal life without fear of some court or government stalking us with fines, i just want to go back to doing what i've been doing for the past 10 years, working on the Viewer.
Funny side note the Viewer currently has roughly 10000 users, if every user spends just a single dollar, this case would be immediately over, no one would have to dish out a massive sum of money, i could pay off this whole disaster in one go and return to making the Viewer. It would be incredibly sad if 10000 users lost their Viewer, it would be all the more disappointing as i'd be leaving all of my users hanging. I hope we can get this fixed.
Every bit counts. Should anything come off or should me manage to lower the amount somehow i'll update this GoFundMe to reflect that.
