Help Melissa Defend her Home In The Divorce

UPDATE: Thank you so much to everyone who has contributed so far. Melissa was able to hire an attorney to look over the final paperwork (so that she doesn't get screwed) and they are doing so today. It would not be possible without your help. The finish is in sight.

I am trying to raise money for my friend's legal defense.

After 20 years together Melissa’s husband left her in 2021. It was unexpected on her part but she found out (in the one therapy session he agreed to attend), that he had been making plans to leave for several months. In retrospect, he had been hiding financial transactions for years. He was prepared. She was not.

He has access to hundreds of thousands of dollars and has spent almost 2 years dragging proceedings out while Melissa’s more meager funds have been whittled away. He is now using some of his hoard to fight for the land and home that she purchased prior to their marriage.

It has been a very costly, one-sided, vicious fight that includes some questionable assertions. For example: at one point his lawyer was asking for a psychiatric evaluation (which is against her constitutional rights), and even writing into the judge’s orders for the settlement agreement that he can foreclose on her home 24 months post-settling if she doesn’t meet all of his demands.

In order to protect herself and her only assets (her home and land), Melissa has maxed out all her credit cards, cashed in her retirement and even gotten a loan on her car (that had been completely paid off).

She is out of funds and now finds herself without legal representation, just a few short weeks before the settlement is presented to the judge. She’s scared to go through the rest of this divorce without any knowledgeable advice or guidance.

We’re raising funds to cover the remaining legal and other costs stemming from the divorce. We need to get her to the finish line and put this traumatic ordeal behind her.
