Help Memorialize Inventor Carl Sjoberg
Donation protected
My name is Mark Naylor.
I am raising funds in order to produce a small grave marker for a great inventor, Carl J. A. Sjoberg, 1851-1901. Husband, father, and mechanical engineer. His grave, recently located, is unmarked.
An immigrant from Denmark and ultimately responsible for at least 13 patents through his life, Carl's greatest work was the Champion Typewriter; a demure but important machine. Among typewriter collectors, this piece of history remains a valuable artifact and reminder of a time when tenacity and ingenuity really were the bedrock of the American dream. This little machine and its predecessors were made for only 5 years, between 1891-1896. He also contributed several patents for the sewing machine.
Carl, his wife, and a daughter rest together in Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn NY. With your help, we can properly honor this forgotten legend.
I have received permission from the cemetery. All proceeds will be used for the grave marker. My efforts, when complete, will become a full research article for "Early Typewriter Collectors" magazine.
