Help Mirlinda continue her study in prison

Hope!

Professor Peer van der Helm from University of Applied Sciences Leiden (UASL) organizes this crowdfunding for Mirlinda in Kosovo (drawing by Anna).

Mirlinda (not her real name) has faced many hardships in her short life. After been abused by her father for years, she ran away from home and without the protection of her family, she fell into the hand of men who used her to lure other men who were robbed. In this process a victim was killed (not by Mirlinda) but she was sentenced to nine years in prison, accessory to murder, a 14 year old girl then, without family.

In Lipjan prison, the able teacher staff worked hard with her and she completed High School with success. Also the prison staff and the women on her block were very supportive to her. But possibilities for further development were blocked because she could not go outside. When professor Van der Helm (UASL), came to the prison with NHC/KRTC on a mission improving the prison climate, she stepped boldly up to him and asked if imprisoned children in the Netherlands could study at University.

Last year Professor Van der Helm and NHC/KRTC successfully organized a small crowdfunding in order to pay for her first year of study. In October last year she was allowed to go outside for the first time to take exams. In her own words: "the best day in my life ever". It is good news to report that Mirlinda passed all her first year law exams with a great success! That despite the limitations on accessing the lectures physically every week, there is a lot of perseverance in Mirlinda. She only has money left to study for three months and that is why we are starting this crowdfunding so she can finish her studies. Furthermore UASL will try, in consultation with the KRTC in Kosovo, to facilitate early release in the future (she still has three more years to go now), so that we can prepare her to a new life outside of prison.

Mirlinda is an example of infectious hope for a better future for young people who have not been very lucky in their lives. In her words, Mirlinda claims that “When she first talked about her dream of studying, she didn’t believe that in less than a year, her life would change on this way and her wish would be taken this seriously and be supported by so many people”.

Will you help us give Mirlinda the future she is so seriously focused on and deserves? We need 3000 euro's to give her that future. Also on behalf of Mirlinda thank you so much!!
