We've all heard it. The world is broken. Everywhere you look, someone needs help, something needs fixing, so why should anyone care about a simple coffee shop on a street corner?
Fantastic question, why should we care about just another local business?
Well first off, Metro Cafe isn't just a normal business and here's why:
In 2016 we opened our doors on 603 Arizona Ave in Santa Monica, CA for the first time to the public, and all we were prepared with was a table that held two pour over coffee brewers. "Bring the heat, we'll start with where we are and with whatever resources we have", we thought. Well we got what we asked for.
It was in the middle of Summer and our A/C conveniently decided to jump ship. But then the weather decided to turn and we got rain! What a save, until it rained so much that our building was not designed to withstand it all. We flooded, many times...
...But three years and many ups and downs later, we are proud to say that we are now serving thousands of people within our community (not to mention the countless friendships that have developed and grown)! Come rain or come shine, we will not be stopped until we have reached every member of our community and have put smiles on their faces.
Now let me explain where you can make a massive impact and take part of something great that will ACTUALLY make a difference.
Out with the old, in with the new...
The unique thing about us is that we are a non profit donation based coffee shop, which means we don't have endless amounts of funding that the majority of businesses do.
Wait, What?
That's right. We threw prices away and left them in the 20th Century, where they belong!
Why?
It's a choice. It's a risk. But we care about our community and we are dedicated to leveling the playing field so EVERYONE is included and welcome. We don't want to be those people that shut someone out who can't afford our coffee, instead we want them to pay what they can or make a donation if they believe in what we are doing. This also allows each person who buys coffee to feel like they have a hand in what we're doing, which they do! It's up to our community, and we are putting it all on the line to show just how much our community means to us.
So how do we need help?
As we get busier we also need to maintain our space, just like a car needs maintenance after a certain mileage. Our building was built in the mid 1900's which means it lacks many of the necessities that modern buildings have. We want to continue to serve quality coffee and keep our peaceful space open to our community but in order to do so, we need to keep our building in top shape.
Here's what we need:
1. Drains (so that if it floods again, we can keep our doors open).
2. A new counter for our coffee bar.
3. A new sink for our coffee bar.
4. Drywall for our ceiling.
5. A/C repair.
6. Bathroom floor repairs
The total cost is $25k, but we can't hit that mark without your help. If you believe in what we are doing and in the impact that we are having on our community, we would love for you to partner with us even if you can't be with us in person. Any amount goes a long way! And if you aren't able to donate, all we ask is that you share this page with just one person!
These upgrades will help us keep fighting the good fight so that we can continue to provide for our growing community. They will make our shop cleaner, healthier, and will give us the upper hand when dealing with whatever comes our way! Take a look at our current progress:
