It’s 5am and a tiny ten-year-old leaps out of bed in the darkness of her humble home and enthusiastically pulls on a beloved turquoise t-shirt.
Mika (Mikaella) lives with her family in Aguapety. Although she is less than 18 miles from the Superniños office, the trip must account for muddy roads, late buses, traffic, and other potential delays. Neither Mika nor her parents mind the distance. For Mika, the joy of teaching and seeing her friends is well worth the trip.
The extra work and logistics are not even a question for her parents, who have watched their daughter blossom in just a few short months. “Before Superniños, my daughter could not make friends or show her true self to anyone,” explains Mika’s mom. “She was very quiet and scared to share her opinions. As a mom, I am so happy to know she is in a safe place and that today she can talk with neighbors about what she is doing. She is SO proud of teaching other kids.”
Mika is doing her work to improve the lives of children in Paraguay. With the support of her parents, Superniños, and YOU, Mika can fully be herself and help close the gap between where other Paraguayan children are with literacy and where they deserve to be.
