Michael Varona was aptly named after the archangel Michael. He has been an angelic warrior for decades, and now he needs your help to slay his personal dragon, an aggressive recurrence of his pancreatic cancer.
In the five years after plunging his sword into this dragon and watching it tuck its tail and crawl away, he has unselfishly given back in so many ways:
• inspiring newly diagnosed cancer patients with his story
• working with the Children’s Miracle Network through the Extra Life charity
• using his skillsets own resources and often his own personal resources to help the Winter Garden Masonic Lodge No. 165 with charities like the Orlando Autism Society through his work with Panic on Plant Street,
• providing guidance and support for Mimi’s Community Theatre since their first season in Winter Garden, FL.
Mike first became a warrior in 1990 when he joined the Coast Guard. Here, he served in law enforcement performing search and rescue in the Great Lakes, which is where he discovered his passion for helping people.
After becoming a professional dancer, he later studied massage therapy and reiki in order to heal people in a very personal way. He has spent years offering his services to people at a price they can afford instead of lining his pockets. Unfortunately, he neglected to line his own coffers and look out for numero uno, for that’s just not Michael Verona. He’s a giver.
On January 16, 2019, Mike was diagnosed with a 1.2 cm mass on his adrenal gland, and another on his lung. A separate test for neck issues uncovered a 2.5 cm mass on his left frontal lobe (which handles cognitive and motor functions). The follow up MRI showed an additional mass on the right side as well.
The good news is that the metastatic pattern of this cancer is not typical for the pancreatic type he had previously and is hopefully not as aggressive. Our friend Mike needs the space and funds to recover. Like most of us in the service industry, heck, in America today, he is only a paycheck or so away from his rent and his bills going unpaid.
He would never ask for money or assistance and would go hungry before he would let someone even buy him a meal, so we’re asking caring and generous people to provide him with the opportunity to be able to focus on his medical treatments and healing for the next few months.
We’re not asking for much because anything will be gratefully accepted, but the more we can collect for him, the better opportunity he will have to be positioned to slay this dragon once and for all. Send your prayers, your healing energy, and if you have the ability to help him monetarily, so much the better. Together, we can all help him gear up for battle.
