Help Mikveh Israel After 3 Antisemitic Attacks

Congregation Mikveh Israel, the oldest continuously active synagogue in the United States, established in 1740, has recently faced a series of disturbing attacks that have left our community shaken. On Tuesday, October 24th, within a 24-hour period, our synagogue was targeted by three separate incidents of arson, attempted burglary, and vandalism.

In the early hours of the morning, surveillance footage captured a man setting a dumpster on fire next to our building, resulting in damage to a nearby window. Just hours later, two other suspects attempted to break into the synagogue, damaging our fence and back door before being deterred. Later that day, another individual defaced a memorial statue on our grounds with profanities. This memorial has also been vandalized with defecation multiple times in recent weeks.

The Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Police have recognized these events as antisemitic attacks. This rise in targeted hostility comes during the Jewish holiday season—a time meant for celebration and reflection—making the timing of these incidents especially painful. Sadly, this follows a disturbing trend of increasing hate crimes and antisemitic acts reported across the country.
