Help Mira Bellwether Complete Her Transition
Mira Bellwether is a disabled queer, trans, intersex woman living in New York City. She is the author of the groundbreaking “Fucking Trans Women: A Zine About The Sex Lives of Trans Women”. And she needs your help to complete her transition!
We, Mira’s friends and family, are raising $35,000 to help Mira pay for crucial, life-saving, gender-affirming medical expenses, including the cost of vaginoplasty. Her health and happiness is extremely important to us and we hope it is to you too.
Mira survives on government assistance, which has afforded her the opportunity to have both breast augmentation and facial feminization surgery via Medicaid. These surgeries were of vital importance to Mira’s wellbeing and helped bring enormous progress towards her self-actualization as well as much-needed relief from dysphoria. Recently, after waiting several years on a wait list for a consultation with the single surgical team that takes her health coverage, Mira was unfairly denied her consultation appointment for reasons unrelated to her health, after having been assured that she was on track, reducing her surgical options through Medicaid from one to zero.
This marks the third rejection for vaginoplasty that Mira has faced in the past 13 years of her transition. The anguish and exhaustion this has caused her has been immeasurable.
Healthcare is a human right, yet trans, poor, intersex, and disabled people are at an extreme disadvantage, failed and marginalised time and again by an oppressive system to a gross extent. This has been Mira’s experience for many years, and we refuse to let it continue in this way any longer.
As people who know and love Mira, we see firsthand every day how much she has done for others and the sheer amount of goodness and kindness she brings to the world. Now, we think it’s way past time for Mira to get the care she needs, complete the surgical portion of her transition, and be enabled to live as she wants and deserves to: safe, happy and healthy. We’re asking you to help make that possible by donating to this fundraiser.
