Help Miracle Moonie Get His Arm Plate Surgery!

Hello, everyone! Moonie is our mini-Husky, who was lost from our property on lower West Hill in Homer on Tuesday 7/9 at 6am. A small sink hole had opened up right beneath on section of our fence. The moment we let him out to go potty, he found the spot and had literally, instantly disappeared. Moonie had never been out of our property on foot, as we always take our truck down the hill and then to the beach, or for our walk, so he was undoubtedly incredibly confused and turned around. He’s also NEVER been alone! Immediately, we launched a campaign to let any and every person in our around town know to be on the lookout. We jumped into both our vehicles and drove down each and every street/driveway/dead end/drainage ditch/byway/etc. we could find. As most of you know, we had tried to update the public through Facebook and the Homer Communications page as “by the minute” as we could.

To say the least, we have been FLOORED by the PHENOMENAL outpouring of support from our amazing community! Each and every single person we came across was so eager to help or spread the word in any way they could. We have had so many people offer extensive time searching, off-roading vehicle use, targeted group expeditions, help walking our other dogs, advice on techniques to lead him home, psychic animal communicators (I FULLY believe this helped!), private property access, boats, a helicopter, and even a PLANE! The amount of times we ran into people and asked them if they’d seen a Husky, only for them to say they’d already been looking for Moonie, is not even measurable!

Yesterday (7/15), something told me to check down the Diamond Creek Trail and walk the beach toward Homer. After going almost two miles with our oldest Husky, Rookie, I decided to turn back. Rookie did not want to. Even though he has his own health holdbacks, he was obviously concerned. Regardless of his protests, we began our climb back up the trail. The very MOMENT we reached the top, there was a call that Moonie was on the beach heading our way! My niece and nephew, as well as a family friend ran down to the beach to try to cut him off. Thank God, the plan worked! He was finally, finally captured!! Unfortunately, he is in pretty bad shape. It appears that our fears were correct, and he had fallen off of the bluff to the driftwood and rocks below. He clearly had a broken left arm which was bleeding, a few porcupine quills in his lip, and very seriously worn down pads and nails.

Dr. Gardenfors is not in town this week, and the other two offices were closed. Kenai Veterinary stayed open late for him to be brought up there. They did an amazing job removing his quills, cleaning, and splinting his arm until it can be fixed. The doctor said she will be calling us today to tell us which surgeon/veterinary center he will need to go to, and roughly how much the procedure will cost. He CANNOT go without the surgery! We are so grateful for our AMAZING, GENEROUS, KIND, LOVING Homer family ♥️ I know we have asked a LOT of you all, and you have all come through for our dear Moonie! We aren’t asking for a handout, we’re asking for a LOAN! If you are able to donate, please do so WITHOUT choosing “anonymous” so we can have a list of names and donations to pay back! (The reason we chose the goal of $5500 is that is the higher end of the estimate. And money beyond what is necessary will be returned!)

Thank you all again, from the bottom of our hearts!

(Also, we’re thinking of having a giant dinner with everyone as soon as Moonie is well enough!)
