Hello everyone! My name is Miranda, and this summer I am marching with the Columbians Drum and Bugle Corps! I am so excited to be serving the corps this summer as a Drum Major, and cannot wait to get started!
What is drum corps?
My favorite way to explain drum corps is that it is essentially club marching band. It is the NFL of marching band. It is a home, a lifestyle, and a place of people with the same passions. We audition for groups until we find our home, and then we spend our summers learning a show and traveling all over the US to perform it!
What is a drum major?
A drum major is the conductor of the ensemble! Not only do drum majors conduct, but they are the highest tier of leadership. This summer I have the fantastic opportunity to lead a team of section leaders, work closely with staff, and grow as a leader and future educator.
Why Columbians?
This season is my fourth contracted season with the Columbians! The Columbians DBC is based out of Tri-Cities, WA and it is one of my favorite places to be.
The aspects of Columbians I love the most is the staff, volunteers, members, and character of this ensemble. I am surrounded by great musicianship, leadership, and am pushed to achieve as much as I aspire to! The staff is a fantastic team of educators that focuses on not just our growth as musicians, but the growth of the members as people and leaders. I love this organization, and these are only a few of the reasons I decide to come back each year.
What do membership fees cover?
Membership fees cover essentially everything that I do not bring in my backpack. My meals, housing, transportation, uniform… the list goes on. This season our ensemble is going further than we ever have before! We are touring all the way to California! Membership fees are what provides these opportunities to us.
My story!
I first joined the Columbians for their 2018 season, and auditioned on vibraphone! I got a contract to play marimba, and eventually worked my way up to center! It was after this season that I knew that I wanted to go to Central Washington University to study music education, and there started the movement towards this goal. I returned for the 2019 season as center marimba and section leader, and spent the summer learning as much as I could. In 2020 I auditioned yet again, earning my contract as center marimba and section leader for a second summer in a row. During this time I was also participating in my first season with IMPACT Percussion, and we all know what happened to the world that winter!
As the pandemic has lightened up, I have continued with the marching arts through IMPACT, taught at a high school, and started school at CWU! All of these instances are what pushed me towards leadership at Columbians, and here I am, contracted to serve this summer as drum major! I chose to audition for drum major because I wanted to give back to this amazing ensemble and staff, and grow as a future educator, and I am so excited to be doing just that!
All in all, if you are able to donate I would be so grateful, and you can be sure in the fact that I am going to be achieving something great! This experience truly does last a lifetime, and creates friendships that lasts just as long. Not only will this be a fun opportunity, but will help me long term in my future career as a music educator!
