Help Miss Culligan Heal

On December 1, 2019, Sharon Culligan, a lifetime resident of Sprague, Washington and teacher to generations upon generations, fell in her home and broke her ankle. While this sounds relatively minor for some, it has become a major ordeal for an 80 year old who already has arthritis and osteoporosis/osteopenia. Surgery occurred the following morning and her tiny ankle is now being held together with screws and plates. Doctors' orders are no weight bearing for 90 days.

The first 20 days were taken care of willingly by Medicare at Touchmark, where therapists worked hard to get her ready for the real therapy once weight bearing. Then we hit a brick wall and threat of being discharged before ready became real. However, with Sharon’s hard work and an awesome therapist, she got four more weeks and Christmas at Touchmark! She is again faced with a discharge date after a visit to the surgeon resulted in continued non-weight bearing orders on the broken ankle.

This is the reality now: unfortunately, not many people are ever ready for an emergency need to be in a safe place to continue to heal, that is not paid for by Medicare insurance. Sharon needs to have five more weeks before the next phase of rehab occurs and Medicare kicks back in. Unfortunately that means a large lump sum up front to be able to continue in this interim healing phase in a different, safe facility with a different level of care that Medicare does not cover.

She would be embarrassed if she knew this ask was happening, but our goal is to help our Auntie Sharon (Miss Culligan to many of you) heal without having to worry about where this lump sum is going to come from.
