I am Misty, some of you may know me for my business MistyCouture , some of you I have the pleasure to call friends.
If we ever spoke, you already know how difficult it is for me to being here writing about myself on a personal level - I'm not good with words and I always shy away from talking about myself, trying to focus solely on my business, but here it is.
It starts in June 2019, everything was going amazingly well when the first issue hit.
Few years prior, my husband hired an accountancy firm to help with our taxes and we fell victim of a huge scam. The owners closed their business and fled with no trace. We then found out all our money from those years had never been paid, leaving us thousands in debt. Upon trying to talk to HMRC and contest the charges, HMRC kept increasing the debt and threatened us multiple times to leave us homeless.
At this time my husband was let go from his job, suddenly, with no notice, simply the contract wasn't renewed.
During these months he started to suffer with severe depression and s* thoughts.
Despite this I still was lucky to pull us through thanks to the orders, even if barely and HMRC stopped the contacts.
After months with no help what so ever from the gov, he found a job. 60% salary cut, but we couldn't be picky.
At this point Covid hit and the first lockdown started.
During this lockdown I was left with barely any orders, but despite this, thanks to some of you I managed to spend 3 months making free masks for hospitals, GP practices and people in need, but that money has been used entirely to cover the supplies, while I started to struggle mentally on top of not being able to pay for the house, bills and studio rent and debts started to pile up.
During this time my husband was fully diagnosed with severe depression, ADHD and the s* thought turned into a full reality and he was admitted to a mental health clinic.
HMRC came back in full force demanding the payment of a freshly updated debt with a whole year of daily % fees on top and threatening us, despite knowing about the diagnosis and our mental and financial position.
During the last 9 months I asked for help, I applied for every possible grant I knew of, with no results.
I tried to stay strong, I tried to keep my head focused, I tried to ask for help and I tried to deliver few orders. I tried to look for a job, retrain reskill or whatever the slogan was, but thanks to Covid all my hospital appointments have been moved an entire year and my chronic pain is making impossible for me to be reliable enough to have what the gov considers "a real job", on top of being in a "category at risk" during the pandemic.
Previously we had put all our savings into a US Visa application that was going well, until the US lawyers completely disappeared in May/June and we never heard anything back.
Between all this and Manchester being in constant tier 3 and lockdown I found myself struggling more and more both mentally and financially.
I tried to put up a brave face, I always do, but this is my last resort.
If nothing changes I will have to close MistyCouture for good after 16 years of work and our house is currently at risk thanks to the debts constant increase.
I know this had been a tough year for most people, but if you even had £1 spare to help me it would mean a lot!
