Dear friends,
... 'When my aunt started showing a little pregnancy belly, I was overwhelmed with joy. Being an only child, it was a gift of heavens. I visited my future cousin-sister almost every day, my loveliest companion to be. I told her stories and waited for tiny movements. Listened patiently and hanged on that growing belly for months. I walked with a pillow under my shirt imagining I was pregnant too.
The anticipation was unbearable. The firstborn of the only son of my grandparents…
When the due day came and my uncle returned from the hospital, everyone fell silent. With my seven years of life experience, I couldn’t understand why I was the only one happy. I went on asking and annoying everyone with questions but not getting an answer. They all behaved like I didn’t exist. They behaved as if someone died.
My father broke the news to me. We were walking on the banks of the river Danube. It was a peaceful autumn day, a beautiful sunset.
The baby is not ‘normal’ he said. He sad nothing else, or at least I haven’t noticed. How can a baby not be ‘normal’ I thought…
Days passed in silence and my aunt finally came back from the hospital. She brought home a cute little bundle. The baby did look slightly different but in the sweetest possible way. Her small split eyes and a tiny nose made her look just like a little doll. I didn’t understand back then why everyone looked into her palms…'
Excerpt from a personal blog 'Life in progress' story SelfLess by the Yugoslav born Dutch violinist Julija Hartig.
Serbia is a country made for the fittest. For complicated reasons, life can be cruel. Majority of the people are struggling to meet the ends financially, and the weaker and ill are sometimes left only to the care of their families.
Children and adults with special needs like Down Syndrome, Autism and other mentally challenging conditions have little or limited facilities to learn, grow and find groups where they could be fit for living a purposeful life. The challenges their families are going through are often tremendous and lead to a lot of suffering. I know it because I come from a family where my niece with Down Syndrome was born into. Being very talented and gifted on some levels of development, she never got a chance to grow her potential and to be guided through possibilities...
MNRO Novi Sad is an Association for Assistance to Mentally Underdeveloped Persons of the City of Novi Sad, humanitarian, non-governmental, non-political and non-profit organization that brings together people with intellectual disabilities and their families.
The Association was founded in 1961 by parents of children with disabilities for mutual help. The Association has the status of a social and legal entity with rights, obligations and responsibilities regulated by the Statute of the Association.
The mission of this Association is: Association for Aid MNRO is a humanitarian organization that works to strengthen the capacity, social integration and advocacy for the rights of people with disabilities and their families to build a tolerant and equal civil society in Serbia.
Knowing how important it is from a personal perspective, my mission is to help MNRO, where my niece goes to with a lot of pleasure, fund a couple of goals, like buying more tools for creative activities which these individuals are so keen on doing. A weaving loom, tools for making pottery would be some of the items that would be welcome. Also organised trips to the nature and excursions would be activities highly apprecisted.
From the bottom of our hearts, we are thankful for your consideration to donate for this purpose.
Yours sincerely,
Julija
