My mom lost her 10 year battle to breast cancer after being diagnosed in 2015. She left behind three children: Ronnie James (19), who she fought for years to be taken care of properly and get his new heart after suffering from hypoplastic left heart syndrome; Sienna Camille (18) (myself), who she pushed educationally and encouraged to be the most successful version of herself; and Mia Grace (16), who she fought endlessly for educational and special education rights to ensure she would be safe at school and get the education she deserved.
Monica Ruth Grey was a lover of animals, at one point housing 3 chickens, 7 cats, 2 dogs, 2 birds, 5 hamsters, and a turtle all at once so her kids had emotional support animals to take care of and look after following a tragic domestic violence case resulting in them having to move from their home and relocate in 2011. She participated in countless city council meetings here in Ventura County, fighting for her children’s education and future health, focusing on the well-being of all Ventura residents. She loved to collect; if there’s one thing I can say about my mom, it was that she loved her stuff—from 1960s antique posters to random bottle caps with cool designs on them, she had a craft for everything. One year for my birthday, she hand-painted My Little Pony wood cutouts just to give me a happy birthday. Words can’t describe the lengths she went to for her kids, animals, friends, and family.
