Update: Unfortunately, Mr. Ross passed away in May 2021. His family is still in need of assistance with medical bills that are still due for his care. Help is still needed, Thank you!
Linwood Dixon Ross, 91, needs additional funding to support his nursing care at home. Currently, he is running out of funds and cannot be at home by himself without assistance. We need your generosity to help him to continue to be in comfort as he spends his twilight years. Deacon Ross is a leader and mentor to many, especially to his beloved Boy Scouts and Eagle Scouts.
Mr. Ross is a Richmond, VA native, but was not able to be a Boy Scout as a youth. He became an assistant Scoutmaster with Boy Scout Troop 78 at his own congregation, Ebenezer Baptist Church, in 1950. Incidentally, this Troop was first formed in 1929. In 1953, he became the Scoutmaster of Troop 78, which years later would become Troop 478. Along the way, he found time to also serve Scouting as a unit commissioner, as his district’s roundtable commissioner, as a district camporee chairman. He also has taken Scouts on treks at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico, has been an adult leader with two national Scout Jamboree troops and has been involved with training other adult scouting volunteers. He and his wife raised two sons and he retired after serving 41 years with the liaison office of the Port of Richmond. All the while, he continued as Scoutmaster of Troop 478. He also taught Sunday school and for 22 years, has chaired the Deacon ministry at Ebenezer. Hundreds of boys have been ‘his scouts’ in Troop 78, and they credit Mr. Ross’s guidance and leadership as a major influence in their lives. 25 of these Scouts have earned the Eagle Scout award. He has received numerous awards: the district award of merit, the Silver Beaver Award, the Whitney M. Young, Jr. Service Award and the Good Shepherd Award from the Baptist Church.
Just as the Scouting Program at Ebenezer Baptist Church sports a legacy stamped by the leadership of Linwood Ross, so too does the Ministry of the Diaconate at the church revolve around the lengthy leadership of Deacon Linwood Ross. Ordained in the 1960’s as a member of the Deacon Ministry, Deacon Ross served as the Chair of the Ministry for over 40 years. During his leadership, the ministry began to uniformly dress for Communions, funerals, and other important and sacred occasions, ordained women into the ministry, and aspired to become the servant leaders depicted in the explanation offered for the ministry in 1Timothy 3: 8-13.
Always exhibiting a calm demeanor, Deacon Ross’ spirituality and dependence on God are always evident. He quotes scripture that he lives by, always giving honor to his Savior for his station in life. Those who know and have worked with him, know about his early life and the fact that his parents were not a force in his life, but rather a neighbor friend who raised him as her own. He credits God with bringing him home after service in the U S Navy so that he could give his life to God and serve his church for the rest of his life.
Deacon Ross is generous, loyal, faithful to his Savior, diligent in his service to all causes he deems important, empathetic, wise in the ways of the world but always apart from the world, a servant leader, respectful to the lowliest and to those in power over him, and always hardworking. Following Deacon Ross as the Chairperson of the Diaconate has not been an easy task. His shoes were big shoes to fill, but because of his dedicated attention to the word of God, and his reliance upon his Savior, I feel that there was no better role model for anyone to follow. He has led the way for us the way Jesus led the way for him.
