Help Ms. Bee build a parklet
This proposal is to fund the first custom-designed parklet in Richmond, Virginia. The COVID-19 pandemic has hurt communities across America, including small businesses and commercial corridors. This is just as true on Brookland Park Boulevard, which is emerging as a thriving commercial district thanks to small business owners like Brandi Battle-Brown of Ms. Bee's Juice Bar.
COVID-19 has prevented people from gathering and socializing inside businesses for over a year now, forcing them out onto the street due to public health precautions. But what happens when your street is an urban heat island that is completely void of shade and places to sit? Where do residents and visitors socialize while visiting local businesses?
This parklet was initiated by Ms. Battle-Brown—with support from the surrounding businesses and property owners—to provide an artistic solution to some of the challenges Brookland Park Blvd faces today. It will be open to the public and serve the entire Brookland Park community, providing gathering space, shade, and places to sit for people of all ages and abilities.
HKS Architects in Richmond designed the parklet pro-bono and Venture Richmond assisted with the permitting and approval process with the City of Richmond. The Brookland Park Blvd parklet is ready for construction, pending funding. Please help us bring it to life.
