Help Ms Dohoney's Family Recover from Ian
Donation protected
Hi,
I'm Margaret Malewski, and my daughter Sophia is a student in Ms. Shandra Dohoney's class. This week, Ms. Dohoney drove to Florida to assist her parents in clearing debris and recovering from the impact of Hurricane Ian. I offered to start this fundraiser to help soften the blow of unexpected expenses they face and as a small expression of gratitude for the work she does every day with our children. Please don't feel obligated to participate, but any amount you can contribute will help. All funds will go directly to Ms. Dohoney's account.
From Ms. Dohoney:
"I arrived at my parents' place on Monday afternoon. I drove through incredible scenes of devastation along the way: RV's tipped over, roofs torn off houses, massive trees uprooted or snapped in half all along the roads. On Monday evening, ordinary people were finally allowed to fill their cars as fuel tankers reached gas stations and fuel was no longer restricted to emergency responders. The hum of generators still fills the air, even as homes in our area slowly regain power.
Thankfully, my parents are unhurt. Nevertheless, peak winds of 225 miles/hr (recorded at the Punta Gorda airport just down the road) ripped off a roof vent and part of their porch roof, causing the ceiling of their living room to crack inward with the pressure and force of the winds. There is also some water leakage, which has yet to be assessed. There have been considerable amounts of debris to be removed. A storage shed containing personal belongings (Christmas decorations, tools, etc.) was damaged by winds, falling branches, and rain. Most of those items have had to be disposed of. Given both of my parents' limited physical abilities, I am assisting with manual labor in debris removal. My mom has been called to work as part of the Emergency Operations Command Center as part of her civilian position with the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office.
Between the preparation expenses and supplies we purchased after the storm damage became apparent, our collective out-of-pocket expenses are mounting. We are still awaiting an insurance adjuster’s full assessment as they are prioritizing their limited time.
Our collective out-of-pocket expenses to date and what is expected over the next week or so will add up to $3000. The deductible for their homeowners' insurance is $1000.
My family is not used to asking for assistance of any kind, but any help that could be offered would go a long way.
With sincere gratitude,
Shandra
