Cornea Transplant Assistance for Mu
Donation protected
Hi friends! While we are blessed beyond measure we are asking for financial help in preparation for Mu's eye procedures which are coming up quickly. For those who do not know, he has a condition called keratoconus, or special eyes as I like to call them. Keratoconus occurs when your cornea — the clear, dome-shaped front surface of your eye — thins and gradually bulges outward into a cone shape, causing blurred vision and sensitivity to light. A treatment called corneal collagen cross-linking may help to slow or stop keratoconus from progressing, possibly preventing the need for a future cornea transplant. The corneal cross-linking procedure involves the combined use of riboflavin (vitamin B2) eye drops and UVA light to strengthen the front layers of the cornea and is currently the only approved treatment for halting the progression of keratoconus. Dr. Price, one of the most experienced surgeons at performing cross-linking in the United States, will be performing the procedure on Mustafah.
Unfortunately the cross-linking is not covered by medical insurance and we will have to pay upfront for all of the medical expenses out of pocket. I have wrestled back and forth with asking for help but ultimately decided to swallow my pride and reach out to our community. The procedure is relatively quick, 2-3 hours per eye, however each is done separately and will require time off work for both of us, Mu to recover and me to chauffer him around to appointments. Ideally this will only last for 1-3 weeks per eye barring any complications. We appreciate all prayers, good intentions and positive vibes you send our way as we embark on this journey. We are hopeful that once the procedures are done and the healing is complete the keratoconus will be halted in its progression and we will not have to worry about corneal transplants down the road. Mu will continue to have his special eyes and his eyesight intact, which is the ultimate goal regardless of cost.
