The story of us. My name is Michelle Foley and I’m trying to help my daddy with the care before and after his heart transplant.
When I was 18 my dad had his first heart attack. He was 40 years old. He had to have triple bypass heart surgery and that’s when they told us he has arterial sclerosis. In a nutshell it means his arteries harden and collapse. Nothing caused it. He didn’t drink or smoke. Lived a healthy lifestyle. He’s always been active. Served in the Air Force and did time in Vietnam. He was military K9 police. He played football,
baseball, played semi professional baseball. As he got older he played softball. Then in the last 10 years he power lifted. He has won 10 world championships as a power lifter in his age and weight division. He’s encouraged my brother and myself to always stay active and play sports. He ran a gym while I was growing up and hosted body building competitions. He was given this heart condition but he never let it stop him. After the original surgery he was placed on a lot of medication. We were told he wouldn’t live past 60. Through the years daddy has had issues with his heart one after another. The most amazing thing is that during this time modern medicine changed and new treatments became available. Once again they were able to give my dad more advance treatments. One of these treatments were stints. Itty bitty tiny rods that when inserted they have little arms that hold open his arteries. To date he has 26!!! That is an insane amount. He has had about 20 heart surgeries. Which brings us to today. My daddys heart is tired. He outlived the original doctors life expectancy. He is still to young to leave us. In September his heart doctor said he needs yet another surgery. He told him expert heart surgeons at University of Washington in Seattle maybe able to get to the area of his heart that was in need of being unblocked. It is an extremely delicate area. So he traveled to Seattle and unfortunately they couldn’t get it fixed. It caused to much stress on my dads heart. They said come back we will try again. So he went back a few days before Christmas. Again they couldn’t fix it. So again they send him home and want him to come back. They scheduled him for April 6 2023. He has been in the hospital since. Last week he had 4 surgeries. One was to open one artery but not the other crucial one, second put in the balloon pump, third took out the ballon and put in the empella and fourth and final was to try and get the difficult artery opened but couldn’t but did manage to stint two more arteries. Now he is in the hospital where they say he cannot leave without a new heart. Saying he will die if he leaves. He has a heart pump constantly pumping 90% of the blood to his heart. Even with the help of medications the pump is still needed to help pump his heart. My poor mama hasn’t left his side. They’ve been married 48 years how can you blame her. A surgery where they were suppose to come home a few days later has turned into you can’t leave anytime soon. My mom has already spent tons of money on her hotel. She changed hotels to save money and to move closer to the hospital and also a shuttle to take her to the hospital. This hotel is still going to cost her thousands. Now we get to the kicker. If all goes right my dad will get the new heart in the next month of two. After he will stay in the hospital for 2-3 weeks. Then, he will be able to leave but not leave Seattle. My mom has been searching for anywhere that has a space for their RV. She still hasn’t found any that can give her a definitive answer. A house or an apartment is very difficult to come by. In the meantime she will be staying in the hotel. When my dads surgery is completed she hopes that they will be able to live in the RV but they will have to have railings built and anything else to make it compliant to the hospitals standards. She has to be no more than 1 hour away from the hospital afterward in case of a medical emergency. They will have to pay rent space for the long term with additional electricity. There will undoubtedly be medication expenses and medical expenses. He will be going back and forth to the hospital for at least 4 months after surgery. My parents live on a fixed income and are retired. I’m asking for any amount to help them make it through this horrible time for all of us. As family we do what we can. I’m hoping as family and friends and strangers you can help them and eliminate some
of the stress that they are facing. Thank you so much.
