Help My Family Build a New Home After Hurricane Beryl
Donation protected
Hello, my name is Monick and currently live in London. I have started this fundraiser in the wake of Hurricane Beryl destroying the home of my mum and 2 younger brothers in Carriacou.
In the early hours of Sunday 1st July 2024, the eye of Hurricane Beryl bulldozed directly over Grenada's two tiny islands in the Eastern Caribbean. Thousands of family's were struck by the category 4 Hurricane suffering for hours. Carriacou is 13 square miles with a population of approx. 5,000 and Petite Martinique is 0.92 square miles with a population of approx. 600. The devastation is unimaginable with 80% of houses, stock and businesses destroyed and those of which have sadly lost their lives.
There is no running water, food is scarce, power is down, reserved for only those with access to a working generator, and the mobile cell towers are down so little or no communication. The damage is absolutely heartbreaking.
It is going to be a long road to recovery but gradually, progress is being made to bring our islands back to some normality. The last week has been a struggle with lack of communication, not knowing if loved ones were even alive, let alone safe. Both islands have suffered tremendous loss in this life changing experience.
Unfortunately, my mum was injured in the hurricane, a roof beam with rusted nails collapsed and impacted her knee, also hitting my little brothers head in the process as the entire house smashed and crumbled around them. My family feared for their lives, scrambling to the only thing left standing in the house - the bathroom. They explained that they were slipping in and out of consciousness as the rain water pooled around them as they were on the floor, not knowing whether it was the winds or the cold that was going to take their lives.
Thankfully, my mum and two younger brothers survived but are now homeless and have been left with only the clothes on their backs. I'm asking for a huge amount of help to give them hope for better days and a roof over their heads. Their whole world has been shattered by this category 4 Hurricane in a matter of hours.
Please help us to rebuild them a hurricane proof and safe home and get them basic needs like healthcare, food, fresh water, clothing, personal care items, beds and home appliances.
All donations, no matter how small, will be greatly appreciated.
Please help, even if only to share. Thank you all in advance for taking the time to read this, donate and share.
