Help my leopard gecko recover from abuse
Donation protected
Hello, my name is Mattie, and I am fundraising for my leopard gecko, Meerkat. She has recently developed a large growth behind her right eye, along with brown crust developing around her eye and mouth. I took her to the emergency vet clinic in my town, and the vet believes it is a retrobulbar abscess. I would need to take her to another vet visit to get an x-ray or ultrasound done to confirm this, and then she will most likely require surgery to remove the abscess. In the meantime, I have not been able to get Meerkat to eat at all, and I worry about the possibility of her developing Metabolic Bone Disease. This disease can warp the bone structure of geckos who do not get enough calcium and vitamins, and I cannot get her to eat the worms or crickets that I would usually dust with calcium and vitamin supplements for her. She is starting to lose weight in her tail as well. The growth is likely causing her a lot of discomfort and blockage, preventing her from eating comfortably. I have tried to show pictures where you can see the uneven proportions of her face and the crust around her eye.
I do not know exactly how much this will cost. The emergency vet visit, plus some antibiotics and painkillers for Meerkat, cost me $213.81. I am asking for $500 to help cover that previous visit as well a second vet visit that will cost at least another $130, most likely more. I will also run into additional fees associated with x-rays, ultrasounds, medications, and potential surgeries needed for Meerkat, so I may need to raise the goal as I get more information from the vet. I may also need to drive to another city 2 hours away to see a specialist, which will cost me even more in gas and travel fees.
I say that she needs help recovering from abuse because I believe an abusive ex-partner of mine caused this issue. Meerkat has been an extremely healthy gecko for the five, almost six, years I have owned her. However, I recently had a bad breakup with an ex, who then chose to move out the day I asked them to go to counseling together. They took the A/C that they had bought for us when they left, which was the day before a huge heatwave in Oregon. They had openly stated that they didn't need the A/C where they were moving, but they were just taking it because it was something they had bought. I tried to negotiate with them to allow me to keep the A/C for a few days while I had a new one shipped in for myself, but they refused. This resulted in Meerkat and I being exposed to temperatures reaching up to 103°F/39°C outside (and hotter inside) for more than a week while I tried to find an A/C that could fit my apartment's windows and be shipped quickly enough to me. The maximum temperature a leopard gecko should be in is 90°F/32°C. I think this heatwave caused a lot of stress and/or bacterial buildup with Meerkat, as this is the first time she has ever had any medical issues in the 5+ years that I have taken care of her.
Thank you for reading, any and all help is greatly appreciated
