Help My Mother Regain Mobility and Support Our Family

Donation protected
For the past 8.5 years, my Mother has been battling excruciating lower back pain that has taken away her ability to live life to its fullest. From playing with her children to simply moving around without pain, this has been an uphill battle. Over the years, she has tried countless treatments, including physical therapy, steroidal injections, nerve-blocking injections, and nerve-burning injections, all in hopes of relief. Despite her best efforts, these treatments have only provided temporary respite. Her doctors have confirmed that surgery is her last option to regain her mobility and significantly reduce the pain.

On February 7th, 2025, she will undergo a critical procedure: L4-L5 Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion with instrumentation and Posterior Lumbar Fusion with instrumentation (PLF w/inst.). This life-changing surgery will give her the chance to return to a pain-free, active life, but it comes at a cost—financially, physically, and emotionally.

The Challenges She is Facing:
While her workplace has approved Family Medical Leave, it is unpaid, leaving her without income for two to three months during her recovery. Unfortunately, disability coverage will not assist during this time, with various factors that contribute to this outcome. Being her place of employment does not pay into State Disability, she would have to pay for disability coverage. Two years ago after an unexpected medical procedure she had sought assistance and was not provided with it. That caused her financial burden, forcing my mother to be unable to afford the disability coverage, ultimately leading to her unfortunate unenrollment from the plan. When re-enrolling in the disability coverage she once had, in anticipation of the listed procedure, she was denied Continuity of Coverage with the reason being "Policy Procedures".

What makes this even harder is her role as a primary caregiver and the sole financial provider for my family. My two younger siblings need her now more than ever:
  • My six year old sister lives with Autism Spectrum Disorder and requires daily care and mobility from her.
  • My nine year old brother was recently diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes this past fall, adding new challenges and responsibilities to our household.

Without the ability to work, our family faces an overwhelming financial burden—medical bills, household expenses, and the day-to-day costs of managing her children’s unique needs. This surgery isn’t just about improving her quality of life; it’s about ensuring she can continue to care for her younger children and provide them with the stability they deserve.

How You Can Help:
I’m humbly asking for your support during this incredibly challenging time. Your generosity will help cover:
  • Medical expenses associated with the surgery
  • Costs of living during her unpaid recovery period
  • Essential resources for my siblings care

Every contribution, no matter how small, will make an immense difference in helping my Mother heal and regain her strength to continue supporting my family. If you’re unable to donate, sharing her story with others would mean the world to us.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and for any support you can offer. Together, we can overcome this hurdle and look forward to brighter, healthier days ahead.

With gratitude and hope,
William G. Dominguez Barrios
