Hello, I'm Sabrina Castro! Ever since I can remember, the desire to engage in a study abroad program has been a driving force behind my passion for education. Now, I find myself on the brink of an incredible opportunity – to shadow doctors in Italy for three weeks this summer. The anticipation of immersing myself in a different healthcare system fills me with pure joy. Having gained a glimpse into the intricacies of the U.S. medical system, I am eager to acquire a European perspective that will undoubtedly contribute to my growth as a future doctor.

As I navigate through my undergraduate journey, pursuing a degree in Neuroscience with minors in Nutrition and Pre-health, my admiration for the medical profession continues to deepen. The study abroad program in Italy presents an invaluable chance for me to fully submerge myself in a new environment, accumulating crucial hours of hospital observation amidst the backdrop of a culture unlike any other. This immersive experience is not just a checkbox on my academic journey but a pivotal step towards becoming the best healthcare provider I can be.

Reflecting on my education, one highlight stands out – the opportunity to shadow patient care technicians in South Florida. Many of these dedicated individuals were immigrants, bringing with them unique techniques and perspectives. They imparted invaluable lessons on the significance of building meaningful relationships with patients, a lesson that goes beyond the confines of textbooks. As the daughter of immigrants, I've been acutely aware of the disparities in medical care, especially for communities facing barriers to access and affordability.

It is particularly challenging for me as the daughter of immigrants who don't have major connections in America to contact a doctor or to access opportunities like the shadowing abroad experience can provide. While I have had the privilege to observe healthcare professionals in the U.S., establishing connections in multiple different fields of medicine proves to be a significant challenge. This program would give me opportunities in a variety of areas and places that I might never have the chance to experience here in the U.S.

Italy, with its universal healthcare system, provides a compelling contrast. This program offers me a front-row seat to witness a genuine passion for medicine, untethered by financial constraints that often dictate healthcare access. Beyond the medical realm, Italy's rich cultural tapestry and technological advancements make it an ideal setting for me to continue expanding my medical experience.
