Nancy AuBuchon Needs Your Help
Many of you may know my wife, Nancy AuBuchon. She and I have been members of the Sullivan community since 1977. During the early years she worked as a teacher’s aide and eventually earned her certification to teach. Later in her career after raising our two girls, she achieved special education certification and became a speech implementer and worked with young children on a one to one basis. Nancy loved her work at the primary school and the many young students that she worked with through the years knew that she loved them too. Some of you may remember her as your teacher or the teacher across the hall with the big smile.

Nancy’s Battle With Parkinson’s
Nancy was diagnosed with early onset Parkinson’s disease 15 years ago when she was 51 years old. Nancy is considered a brittle patient and has had a tough journey as the disease progressed. She had a deep brain stimulator surgically implanted in the subthalamus area of both sides of the brain in 2013, and another deep brain stimulator implanted in the globus pallidus area of the left side of the brain in 2018. During the last couple of years, Parkinson’s has robbed Nancy of the ability to walk. She now has to take carbidopa/levodopa every two hours around the clock. At the end of dose periods her body goes into an off mode where she finds it hard to move and she experiences muscle spasms and pain. With the progression of Parkinson’s Nancy has experienced strong dyskinesia (uncontrolled movement) and has fell many times. Her right shoulder joint which was replaced in 2015, is permanently out of socket after falls left her with a broken scapula. Last year, she broke all the ribs on her right side. This year, she has suffered from the growth of a soft tissue mass on her shoulder and neck. We are currently waiting for the doctors to figure it out and come up with a way to treat it.

Need For Caregivers
As the Parkinson’s has progressed, the need for caregivers has increased. We now need help at night and during half of the daytime. I ask that everyone acknowledge Nancy’s dedicated career and love of education and others and help me provide the care needed to allow her to live at home. I have set a goal of raising enough money to pay for caregivers for three years. Please help take care of this loving woman. Nancy and I thank you in advance for your help.
For Nancy
Seven years ago I submitted the following to the radio show Prairie Home Companion in hopes that they would read it on air at the beginning of the program.
“Greetings to my brave wife, the rock lady of Sullivan MO. You have inspired us with your positive attitude while fighting Parkinson’s and enduring deep brain stimulation surgery. You have touched the lives of many people with your gifts of lucky rocks. This is for you!
My Lucky Woman
I said to a squirrel, "What is that you are carrying?" and he said,
"It is my lucky rock; isn't it pretty?" I held it and said, "Indeed."
I said to God, "What is this woman?" And He said, "It is my lucky rock; isn't she wondrous?"
Yes Indeed."
