Help Naomi fund her tuition to remain in Canada

From Naomi:

Hi everyone,

My name is Naomi and I am an international student studying chemical engineering at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada. I am truly grateful to have been given the opportunity to study at such an amazing school. Though I no longer have any passion for chemical engineering, I wish I could complete my program as planned but it has become clear that I will need to put that on hold as I can’t afford to pay the $50,000 tuition fee. I need to be enrolled in a post-secondary program to maintain my status in Canada and I have been accepted into the culinary program at a nearby college. I have paid the $1500 deposit but I need your help with the tuition fees. The tuition for this program is $17,433 which is less than half of the cost of the University of Waterloo and needs to be paid by June 14th to maintain my spot.

In 2017, my family started experiencing financial instability due to the economic downturn in Nigeria, my home country. This has made it nearly impossible for them to support me in paying the tuition fees of over $50,000 yearly for the chemical engineering program. Since then, I have worked extra coop terms when possible, taken a number of different jobs, and saved aggressively. In the end, it wasn’t enough and it breaks my heart to admit it.

The struggle to remain in school and the strain of financial difficulty put me in a constant state of anxiety. Mentally, I was in a terrible place. My grades fell and my health suffered.. As if the stress wasn’t enough, because I had not paid tuition, I didn’t have access to the students’ health insurance. This means that when I got sick all I could do was play nurse and pray that it wasn’t serious.

During this time, I got back into cooking because it calmed my mind. Cooking gave me control and helped me feel empowered - something that had become so alien to me. My friends were always impressed with things I made and would even refer me to people they knew. A friend suggested that I apply to the culinary program at a nearby college and within a week, I was accepted.

I have paid the $1500 deposit to secure my spot and the tuition fees ($17,433) are due on June 14th after which I need to renew my study permit so I can remain in Canada. The living expenses for the year are an estimated $6,072. If added to the tuition, that is a total of $23,505; the amount that I am hoping to raise. Even at a cost of $23,505, it is still less than half the cost of the chemical engineering program at Waterloo.

I don’t believe my time and efforts studying chemical engineering are wasted, I plan to continue later. But at this point, I believe God is calling me to culinary school and that’s what I’ll follow. I hope you can support me as well.
