HELP NEED FOR MY BELOVED WITKRANS PRIMARY SCHOOL IN NAMIBIA
For many years a piece of my heart has been living in a small town in Namibia, Africa. 30 years have passed since that tiny mission outpost and primary school made an indelible mark on my soul.
Recently, I learned that my beautiful Witkrans Primary needs some assistance and support. In short, I want to help them rebuild the school library and also provide some basic equipment (see below for more information).
This is where you come in. Because I can’t physically be in Namibia to offer my support and service, I’m trying to collect monetary donations from my community, friends, and family, which I will send to the school and they will purchase the items they need.
As a young woman inspired by the anti-apartheid struggle, I moved to Witkrans with the WorldTeach program in 1992, two years after Namibia won independence from S. Africa. I worked closely with the teachers, students, and local community, helping them transition from Afrikaans to English; English being the language of independence. While there, I established a school library and a small teacher resource center.
Recently, I’ve been in contact with a some of the school’s staff. Apparently, the library needs some TLC and the school needs basic supplies and equipment. The total amount I’m hoping to raise is $1,500.
Witkrans staff’s wish list: (estimates based on Amazon Namibia, converted into US dollars)
6 projectors: approx. $350
“Small projectors that we can use in classes. Big ones are good for lecturers, but not us with a small number of learners.”
1 Printer: approx. $200
“I've always wanted a printer that we can use for printing good quality poems with pictures for our learners.”
2 globes: approx. $100
“We only had one globe and it's broken.”
Items I’d also like to provide:
Ink for the printer – We know that’s costly.
Basic art supplies – Can any teacher or school have enough?
Computer Speakers/Audio equipment –This community is INCREDIBLY musical. Their singing and harmonizing abilities are inspiring. Incorporating more music into their learning would be fantastic.
Books –Note: I’ve put the school in touch with international book donors, and some family/friends have donated books which I will ship over. However, can a library ever have enough books? It would also be beneficial for them to purchase books of particular interest to Namibian children.
If you’re interested in helping us, I’d be so grateful.
Love,
Annie
(Note: GofundMe does not have banking set up for Namibian accounts so I will send the donations via secure international wire transfer.)
