Help Needed - Brian's Story

We are composing this GoFundMe page on behalf of our 45 year old son, Brian Daugherty. He is a part time single dad who lives in Wisconsin with his 11 year old daughter. Following is a history of what has happened to him and why we are sending this request to you.

In November of 2021 after going for a normal physical exam, his thyroid blood work was abnormal. Since he was also experiencing severe headaches the endocrinologist decided to do a Brain MRI.

The MRI showed a rare brain mass in the posterior pituitary lobe. The neurosurgeon then formed a group of his peers from various parts of Wisconsin to know the proper way to treat it.

There were only three hospitals in the Wisconsin area that were able to do this surgery so he decided to go to Green Bay. During surgery, 10% of the tumor was removed before Brian had a stroke and the doctor had to stop.

The stroke affected his entire left side causing weakness in his legs and arms. After four days of rehab, his strength was slightly recovered and he was discharged to go home. The tumor was biopsied and was determined to be a benign spindle cell oncocytoma, which is quite rare accounting for only 0.1-0.4% of tumors.

In hopes of decreasing the size of the growth Brian went through 6 weeks of radiation, without success. Since then he has MRI’s every six months and the tumor has not changed in size, which is good, but he still suffers with severe headaches and 40% visual loss and depth perception. He has seen a neuroophthalmologist and gone through several tests only to be told his vision loss is so severe they cannot help him. He recently went to a new ophthalmologist which is fitting him for prism glasses in hopes that they will help.

Brian has tried several times to go back to work as a sheet metal fabricator which entails him bending sheet metal into various items which is dangerous with his limited vision. He has applied for short term disability and has only been approved twice, but the money he receives has not helped him enough to take care of his medical costs and every day needs.
