Help Build A Regulation Outdoor Basketball Court

Nelson Hoops Association (NHA) is fundraising to reach our funding goal to ensure the proposed regulation Outdoor Basketball Court at Lakeside Park breaks ground in Spring 2022. The proposed project includes one regulation outdoor basketball court and 4 to 6 regulation (10 ft) hoop systems to maximize participation. The present courts are obstructed by fencing and tennis net and stanchions, and encroaches upon adjacent tennis courts. We have a great opportunity at this moment to develop this legacy project for the basketball community and the public alike as there are presently NO OUTDOOR REGULATION BASKETBALL COURTS WITHIN CITY LIMITS.
NHA has solicited funding through various institutional and organizational grants, however, the project must demonstrate an initial contribution from NHA community to proceed. Hence, we have set out to raise $40,000 to ensure Outdoor Basketball Courts are built at Lakeside Park in 2022.
The project received a large outpouring of support from the community in 2021, garnering over 1,200 signatures during a petition of support , and positive feedback following presentations to Nelson & District Recreation Commission No. 5 and the City of Nelson Committee of the Whole meeting. The proposed Courts have received approval from the City of Nelson to proceed with planning, and a memorandum of understanding to operate and maintain the amenity is pending.
NHA is a registered BC non-profit society and has been delivering basketball programming to youth and adults throughout the West Kootenay region since 2013. Youth programming includes recreational youth basketball leagues, camps, coaching mentorship, athlete development programs, and post-secondary scholarships. We would like to see a regulation Outdoor Basketball Court built in a central location such as Lakeside Park to advocate for healthy living through sport, greater accessibility to amenities for youth, and to support the burgeoning basketball community in Nelson and throughout the West Kootenays.
