Help Nelson on his way to recovery

Donation protected

Hello everyone! My Brother Nelson has been dealing with neck and back pain since November 2023. He was referred to physical therapy by his doctor, with no success in pain reduction. As time went by the pain became more unbearable, to the point he was unable to sleep. On February 25, 2024 Nelson went to the ER due to severe pain and after many tests with no results he was referred to an orthopedic doctor who did an CT Scan and found what looked to be a mass. At that point he was referred to a neurosurgeon, and on March 20, 2024 it was determined the mass was a tumor in his upper spine (C6 to be exact). The tumor had formed and grown within the spine, rather than the outside of it making this is a very risky surgery. More tests were done to check if the tumor had spread to the rest of his spine/back, as well as his brain. No tumor was found in the rest of his spine/back and we are waiting biopsy results from his brain tissue. On May 8, 2024 at 8am Nelson underwent a 6 hour long surgery (Laminectomy Cervical) in hopes to remove the tumor. Going into surgery the surgeon feared causing mobility issues and wasn't sure if they would be able to remove the tumor at all once they open went in. Doctors successfully removed about 70-80% of the tumor without compromising his mobility long-term. Nelson will need radiation to remove the remaining part of the tumor. Before surgery it was unknown if the tumor was benign or malignant. It was determined after surgery that the tumor was the most aggressive form of malignant. Nelson is currently in the ICU recovering and is expected to be in the hospital for about a week and will then be moved to a rehab facility to help regain full mobility of his body, where he is expected to be at for about 2 weeks. It is unknown how long it will take to be fully recovered, but it can take up to a year.

Nelson is a hardworking man who had always taken care of his wife and 2 daughters. Without being able to work it will be a huge financial hit on his family. His insurance has also hit the limit and we are unsure how much will need to be covered out of pocket after everything is over.

With your contribution, you can help alleviate the financial burden that will be weighing heavily on Nelson and his family. Allowing Nelson to focus on his recovery without the added stress of financial worries.

Thank you.

Gracias.
