Help new Catholics in North Africa receive sacraments
Donation protected
Dear Christian,
The St. Nicholas Tavelic Network for Morisco Catholics, or ‘TavNet’, is a missionary network for converts from Islam to the Catholic Faith.
In most of the Muslim world, local Catholic communities are unwilling or unable to accept converts for a variety of reasons. A small network of underground churches made up of primarily of young Catholics in the Muslim world are working together towards the conversion of their people across the Middle East and beyond. Our movement has grown exponentially, nearing nearly a hundred converts across the world, with a significant number located in North Africa.
To meet the needs of these young converts, who we can attest are filled with love for Jesus Christ and an ardent desire to receive the sacraments, we will need to travel to a country in North Africa this December for nearly a month.
A number of priests and lay missionaries will set up a temporary oratory; there, converts who are prepared to be received into the Church will receive sacraments of initiation, and an intensive catechesis school will be held. We will celebrate Christmas together as magnanimously as possible to mark this event as a rebirth of the faith in this historic heart of the Latin Church, home to so many of our most beloved saints.
For many converts, this will be their first experience of Catholic life: we will celebrate the Divine Office and Holy Mass each day, provide guided spiritual exercises, and fast together for the Advent season. This event will also allow us to field questions from some trusted non-Catholic Christian friends from the region who will visit.
Your donations will be vital in providing the converts and missionaries with the following necessities, and in covering any other emergent costs:
- Travel tickets for the essential team;
- A villa to use as a headquarters and a temporary chapel for nearly a month;
- Travel for those living across the rest of North Africa, including one connecting flight and several train tickets
- Accommodation for visiting attendees - at least one rental for either gender
- Food and drink
- Reverent decoration of the temporary chapel
‘Mission is experienced in fellowship with our communities and with the whole Church’ [Dilexit nos, n. 212], and indeed as our Lord Himself taught, ‘by this shall all men know that you are my disciples, if you have loved one for another.’ [John 13:35].
Facilitating this event will help to bring many persecuted aspirants out of a long period of loneliness and isolation, bringing them together into a real community of the faithful. In this way, we can honour the words of Christ our Lord, who said, ‘For where there are two or three gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them’ [Matthew 18:20], ‘so that the Spirit can guide us in unity as brothers and sisters’ [DN, n. 28].
Your donations will be of historic significance, aiding the Church in the conversion of North Africa and of the entire Muslim world. We believe with the Holy Father that together, ‘our hearts, united with the heart of Christ, are capable of working this social miracle.’ [DN, n. 28]
