Help Nick recieve stem cell therapy to walk again
Donation protected
Nick is 47 years old. On April 3, 2019 he was driving to work, just like any other day. But on this day he felt pain in his chest. He made it into work but thought he might be having a heart attack. His co worker took him to the ER. They ruled out a heart attck, but Nick suddenly could not move his legs, feel his legs or urinate.. within 3 -4 hours He went from a normal morning routine to paralyzed from the chest down to his toes from a rare neurological disorder called transverse myelitis. This disorder is where the body attacks the spinal cord. In Nick's case we never found out a reason why. This causes paralysis, numbness, tingling, bladder and bowel issues, muscle spasms, pain, trouble controlling body temperature and more. Nick has all these symptoms from the chest down to his toes. Nick used to play soccer daily. He even played semi pro back in the day. Life has drastically changed for him. No more running miles, now he can maybe walk 100 feet before resting. He has unpredictable muscle spasms that cause falls. He can't use the bathroom normally. He can't stand and throw a basketball with his kids, because he can't feel his legs. He must look at his legs while walking with crutches. He just wants to be able to walk across the room holding a cup and be able to use the bathroom normally. Mostly he wants to be able to be more involved with his kids activities. Nick has 4 kids. His youngest doesn't remember when his daddy could "walk" and run. It breaks my heart. We take for granted the little things in life. Quality of life and emotional well being are effected when you can't do simple tasks.. like stand to take a shower. He also can't stand at the counter and make himself food. His balance is terrible. Transverse myelitis is very rare. The only treatments available are steroids, IVIG, plasmapheresis. We have tried to find trials, specifically for stem cells. Stem cells from a donor ( not embryonic stem cells, just to be clear) are known to be regenerative for spinal cord injuries. There is no cure, but just a little improvement on quality of life would be huge. After 4 years we have found a stem cell therapy that has an 80% chance of improving his symptoms. This opportunity is huge but not covered by insurance. It involves 5 days of therapy and is roughly $16,000 plus hotel and flight. If you feel like helping out a guy who just wants some of his normal life back, These funds raised will go to stem cell therapy and physical therapy after to help in regaining some mobility.
Stem cell therapy has an 80% chance of healing improvement. This is his best and only option at this point. The spinal cord is very delicate. Mesenchymal stem cells are proven improve all types of injuries. Please help nick physically and emotionally so he can get back enjoying an active life with his wife and kids. You will be able to follow nick on his journey..Thank you
