Help Nick Shorter after the Taree flood
Donation protected
This page has been created by Marta Flores, Communications Manager at RDO Australia Group, on behalf of the Company to support one of us, Nick Shorter, and his young family. Nick is a Service Technician with our Taree team, and his house was flooded in the morning of Saturday the 20th of March 2021.
When Nick and Chloe went to bed on Friday night, it was raining very heavily and the wind was howling but they were not expecting to have their neighbour screaming at their front door for them to get out of the house at 5am the following morning.
Nick got their two small cars out onto nearby higher ground while Chloe packed a bag for their baby, Mila, who was born on the 11th of February. Chloe’s parents were visiting from Brisbane and helped pack a few more bags with clothes and important documents.
With the water rising steadily, everyone was on higher ground in town by 6am except for Nick, who stayed back for as long as it was possible to help their neighbours down the street.
Nick and Chloe were able to get back to their house and check the damage on Tuesday the 23rd. The water had receded, but the house was full of mud and silt, as it appears the flood waters peaked at around 1 foot high inside.
They have started the clean-up process inside the house, which is rented, and are now facing the need to replace many of the contents. Because of the location of the house, they had been unable to get insurance.
Nick and Chloe are currently staying in the little granny flat below Chloe’s grandparents’ place. With so many houses damaged in the area, they expect the rebuilding and repairing process will take a while.
Hard times for Nick and Chloe, but they keep looking on the positives, like their community and the tight knit relationship with their neighbours which allowed them to evacuate their home in time.
As part of Nick and Chloe's community, let's do what we can to help them get back on their feet. All donations, however small, count and are passed on entirely (minus transaction fees) and directly to them.
On behalf of Nick and Chloe, thank you for all your support.
