Help Nicky get a new Active Wheelchair

Donation protected
Hi, my name is Nicky, I’m a Trans Woman and an ambulatory wheelchair user and I started this GoFundMe to help me raise enough funds to purchase my first Active Wheelchair that will be made to my specifications. Any donations will help!

I suffer from Fibromyalgia and Severe Asthma and this has an impact on my movement because of the pain my fibromyalgia causes and the shortness of breath my asthma causes. I frequently have days where I struggle to move or have had falls because of the pain I’m in and this is why I use a wheelchair.

My current wheelchair is about 5 years old but bits are starting to break on it or get lost. My footplates no longer stay flat and the bolts that are supposed to keep them in place had gotten loose and lost. The wheels themselves have started to wobble when I’m using it and the bit of Velcro that keeps the seat together no longer sticks as effectively. All in all, my current chair doesn’t always feel safe to use and this is why I’m trying to raise funds for a new chair.

I did have a powerchair for a few years on Motability but unfortunately, I had to return that because I was struggling to afford to live and pay my bills while I had it on hire; I was also struggling with storing it because of how big it was and my flat being small.

I’ve already tried getting help with a wheelchair from the NHS however all they would supply me was an old-style steel-framed wheelchair (similar to my first ever wheelchair) that I am unable to push myself in because of how heavy it is and I require someone to push me in if I use it which removes the independence a wheelchair is supposed to give me.

The hardest thing for me to do was admit that I needed the help of a wheelchair nearly 5 years ago however since getting my current wheelchair I have been able to go and do things with my friends and family that I otherwise wouldn’t have been able to do because of my pain and mobility. I’ve had some amazing days out and spent quality time that I wouldn’t have happened if I didn’t have my wheelchair and I would have ended up just staying at home in bed but instead, I’ve had countless days out and I’d love for them to continue.
