Help Nina Steyn to pursue para-alpine ski racing

My name is Nina Steyn, and I’m an 18 year old visually impaired (VI) skier in need of financial support for my pursuit of a career in para-alpine ski racing. I’m also a first year psychology student at the University of British Columbia, where I’ve joined the UBC Thunderbirds ski race team.

I learned to ski alongside my parents, and only skied recreationally for most of my childhood. After I lost my central vision due to Stargardt’s disease, I had to relearn how to ski with the help of Silver Star Adaptive Snow Sports (SSASS), who suggested that I try racing, and in the few years since I have grown a passion for it. I’ve decided to take my skiing more seriously this year, my goals being to improve my technique, gain experience competing, and eventually to compete at a higher level.

VI skiers ski with the help of a guide: someone who skis directly in front of them, usually wearing a high-vis vest, who will call out pitch changes, bumps, turns, gates, and other obstacles over bluetooth headsets.

Ski racing is an expensive sport for anyone; but as a VI skier, I have to cover all expenses not only for myself, but also for my guide, Bella, as well as pay her for her work every day we train or race. Being a full time student, I currently have no income to pay for all of this. My scholarships and financial support from my wonderful parents pay for my education and living expenses. BC Adaptive Snowsports is lending their support with grants for some expenses; but I need much more to cover training fees, passes and lift tickets, race fees, club registration fees, skiing equipment (race gear, multiple skis and poles, etc), special VI equipment (headsets, vests), equipment maintenance, medical expenses (reports, contact lenses etc.), travel and accommodation for training, training camps and races, and guide fees.
