Help Nisha Provide for Himself and His Brothers
Donation protected
I am a Study Helper with World Bible School. In November of 2024, I studied with a young man named Nisha Otieno (age 24) and he asked to be baptized. A local preacher, Chris Kambona, living near the town of Sare in Kenya, Africa, baptized Nisha on 11/14/24. Between texts, emails, and photos from Chris, his dad, Oscar, and Nisha, I have learned the following:
Nisha’s parents died when he was young. He is living in a “desert” village with his grandma and two younger brothers (ages 16 & 12) in a one-room adobe house with a deteriorating metal roof. No electricity, no plumbing. Nisha is the “breadwinner” for this family, but he has no permanent job. He goes from house to house in his area each day doing odd jobs. He is not paid with money, but with food. They are quite poor.
As I studied with Nisha, these events occurred: the house was damaged by flooding, grandma died in December, heavy rain collapsed part of the house roof, the younger brothers had to drop out of school because they have no funds, work for Nisha has become more scarce, and they are in need of some kind of help.
Chris has a family and also takes care of 25 orphans on a daily basis, so he is very limited in what he can do to help. So . . . Nisha wants to start a popsicle business to sell this very popular treat in his area where he says there is no one doing this and he sees that there is a desire among the people for this. Chris has helped him research what is needed. Together they went and looked at the equipment and supplies needed, obtained an estimate, and sent me a photo of the list which totals $1370. I Googled this popsicle thing in Kenya and it appears to be a very viable undertaking. But I had many, many questions. In answer, I was informed that members of the Nyabera Church of Christ, where Nisha worships (with Chris & Oscar) and where he was baptized, said they would buy the ingredients needed for the initial batch of popsicles. Also, a lady in the church agreed to let Nisha put his equipment in her home so he can run it off of her electricity since he has none. But we need help to buy this equipment for Nisha so he can try to make this a profitable venture and provide ongoing support for him and his brothers.
My wife and I, in December, sent funds via Western Union to Chris to buy Luo (native Kenyan language) Bibles for Nisha and others in the church there. And we are certainly willing to “put some skin in this game.” We are hoping to raise the entire $1370 through this GoFundMe account, but if we have to, we will match you dollar for dollar ($685) to make this happen for Nisha and his brothers.
Please give this some thought and prayer and help in whatever way you can. Blessings to you and yours,
Jim
