Help us keep this LGBT+ Safe House
Hello everybody.
With the rest of the world slowly moving towards inclusion and acceptance of queer folks, there are still certain countries that are still hostile towards queer people. One of such countries is Nigeria, which has recently become one of the most dangerous places in the world, for LGBT+ people.
And now, someone who opens up her home to LGBT+ people in Nigeria is about to lost her apartment. She lost her job last year, shortly after getting her apartment and has such not been able to save for her rent.
The reason why we’re starting this GoFundMe is so we don’t lost this house that has become a safe space for many young, ousted LGBT+ folks who can no longer stay with their families for fear of being assaulted or worse.
At the moment, she has two gay boys living in the spare bedrooms. Ever since they were ousted to their families, they’ve had nowhere else to go. And this number changes constantly, based on who needs help and a place to stay. Her losing the space will not just affect her but others as well.
For those who are confused about the amount and how the rent system works in Nigeria: we pay our rent annually, and the entire rent has to be paid upfront. So, the rent we’re trying to raise right now is for her 2019/2020 rent, and she has up until the end of THIS month to pay.
The amount might seem like it’s a lot, but when you divide it by 12, her
rent is actually $250 a month. Please help us save the safe house to ensure the continued safety of young queer people who don’t have anywhere else to go, or anyone else to turn to. No amount is too small or little. Every dollar counts and will go a long way in helping us keep this space.
Thank you,
Noria
P.S.
The rent itself is $3,000. We have included an extra sum of $100 to cover the transaction fees for this GoFundMe. If we are only able to raise enough to cover the rent, Leah will pay the transaction fees.
