One year old Nutmeg was SAVED from euthanasia with literally only HOURS to spare. Nutmeg is a beautiful, sweet girl who is so deserving of a chance at life, like TOO MANY other dogs who find themselves in a high-kill shelter for one reason or another. California shelters and rescues are in CRISIS right now with an UNPRECEDENTED amount of owner surrenders, strays and extremely LOW ADOPTIONS. Rescues are struggling to meet the demands to help so many animals in need with very few options available.

Nutmeg had been waiting 36 DAYS for a family to come get her in the shelter in Palmdale, CA and was just one day shy of her euthanasia deadline when she was rescued.

A sweet couple in Hawaii had just recently lost their beloved dog to an inoperable spinal tumor and were following rescue pages to find their new family member. They had seen Nutmeg's shelter plea, initially not realizing she was in Palmdale, California, and fell in love with her. When the couple realized that Nutmeg was on the mainland and they could not just go and adopt her themselves, they reached out to a group of wonderful kitty rescuers there to ask if it was possible to get help to save this precious dog’s life. They absolutely wanted to provide Nutmeg with a new home and life and were terrified no one would come for her and she would die. The couple were already emotionally invested and generously pledged an amount that covers half of Nutmeg’s expenses! So, with that we immediately got to work on a plan to help them. California rescue Shepherd’s Paw Animal Rescue and Rescue Kitties of Hawai’i in collaboration with a wonderful group of rescue volunteers, learned of this touching story and committed to help fly Nutmeg to her forever home in Hawaii

You may ask why Nutmeg needs to go to a home so far away? The sad truth is that with a horrific amount of dogs in CA needing homes, Nutmeg is unlikely to find an adopter here and had zero rescue interest prior to SPARI being contacted with the details of our plan. SPARI are truly up against it in California, doing everything they can to save as many dogs as they can. On any given day there are 200 plus German Shepherds in Los Angeles County Shelters alone and precious Nutmeg, without the promise of an adoptive home, was very likely going to die if no one had stepped up. We were Nutmeg’s ONLY CHANCE thanks to having a plan of a forever home.

With a dire lack of fosters available and rescues being full, Nutmeg has already been in a boarding facility since early April and is still facing another 30 or so days while we complete her pre-flight vetting so she can avoid quarantine when arriving on the island. This time in boarding plus government mandated document requirements all costs money and even with a generous donation from the adopters we still need YOUR HELP to cover remaining fees to get Nutmeg home to her family.
