Help Nyaliem Bury Her Son and Recover from Abuse

Donation protected
Nyaliem is a South Sudanese-American mom who has been dealing with the loss of her sons and homelessness because of abuse.

The immediate issue:
In 2021, Nyaliem's abusive ex-husband kidnapped their sons and took them from their boarding school in Eth* to South Sudan. He threatened the most outspoken, eldest son with isolation and separation. He passed away shortly after the threats. The youngest son is still in South Sudan. Nyaliem has no money to get her remaining son and needs help with tickets, burial, and financial recovery after erroneous child support.

The long story:
Like many Nuer women, Nyaliem was forcibly married and was brought to America to work in factories while her ex-husband drank and hung out with his friends. After years of abuse toward her and her kids, she decided to divorce.

Misogyny is intensified for female divorcees so the entire community isolated her. When it came time to get letters of character from close family and friends for court, no one wrote a letter for Nyaliem. 3 Nuer men lied about her character (one was a pastor no less) so the ex-husband could have custody. Nyaliem also had to pay ~$900 in child support so he could continue his lifestyle. She lost her house and car. She still uses the bus to go to work. The ex-husband didn't feed the kids and abandoned them. CPS brought the children back to Nyaliem. In the midst of this, their eldest son was killed. The ex-husband fled to Juba, South Sudan. He let one of the men who lied utilize his child support card that Nyaliem still had to pay.

To place her remaining sons in a more healing environment, she sent them to a good school in Mettu, Eth. Family was nearby. The ex-husband found this out, kidnapped the kids, and brought them to Juba, South Sudan in 2021. The kids did not go to school while with him. They barely had anything at all. The eldest son was always very vocal about his father's abuse and texted his mom with concern about his safety. He asked her to get his aunt's number—she lived in South Sudan. His father threatened to separate him and his brother and ended up doing so. The eldest boy died suddenly in August 2022. The other son is still in Juba, and Nyaliem doesn't have the funds to get him, bury her other son, and get a death certificate.

Nyaliem needs to:
  • Go to South Sudan to bury her son and get a death certificate
  • Retrieve her other son who is still with their abusive father
  • Move to a safer place in the USA
  • Get a car
