While my mother has always done her best to make sure I have everything I need, I would like to meet her halfway, with your help.
I’m currently a Linguistics student at The University of Cape Town, and I’m a mere six months away from completing my studies.
Unfortunately, I won’t be able to register for the new year without clearing my debt for 2020, and paying the 2021 registration fee by March 2021.
Covid-19 has affected us all in the most unexpected of ways, and had it not been for the nation wide lockdown, my studies would not have taken this six month extension, and I would be in a better position to settle my fee account.
In addition to this, my mom, who was a health worker in Mauritius, opted to be closer to her family as a result of the pandemic, and is thus finding her feet after working abroad for 5+ years. I would like for my university debt to be the least of her concerns for her first few months back home.
I haven't completed my studies in record time, as my experience at UCT has been impacted by month long shutdowns, with the final blow being Covid-19. While these challenges have been difficult, I've persevered, and it's so rewarding to be this close to a finish line I'm determined to cross.
Having had such a particular tenure at university, my friends and I felt an overwhelming desire to assist other young students in their educational pursuits, leading us to register an NGO (IBYAfrica) aimed at assisting secondary school-leavers (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DvdMb3WYW8Y&feature=youtu.be). This way, I can be certain that at least one other person is better equipped when entering their final stages of their secondary schooling career.
Lending a helping hand whenever I can has taught me that asking for one is not the easiest task, however, I've recently come to see that trusting in the kindness of others can often make the biggest difference.
I would appreciate it more than anything if you could help me (even if you’re just sharing this link) in my desire to give my mom a break, and that my appeal to meet her halfway at the end of my academic journey resonates with you, especially during these trying times.
At the end of this funding period, all donations will be directed straight to my UCT fee account.
