Help offset unexpected NICU stay for Cora
Donation protected
The week of the 4th of July, Elizabeth went into the ER multiple times with preeclampsia and hypertension. She was 33.5 weeks pregnant. Due to the risk of stroke, her doctors decided to induce and little Cora was born 6.5 weeks early. Elizabeth continues to struggle with high blood pressure and Cora has been in the NICU as she's a preemie.
Why the GoFundMe? Elizabeth, a health care professional, did not have insurance. Unfortunately, as a licensed Nurse Practitioner who worked part-time between two clinics, Elizabeth was not an insured employee. Also, unfortunately, her husband Clay just started working at a new office and hadn't yet added Elizabeth to his policy. They thought that they had more time. Our healthcare system is definitely broken. In most other first world countries (Canada, UK, Scandinavia, etc), an experience like this wouldn't be an issue. That's not the case here.
The average uninsured labor and delivery charges without complications can top $25k in the United States. According to the March of Dimes, the average length of stay for a baby admitted to the NICU is 13.2 days. The average cost of a NICU admission is $76,000 with charges exceeding $280,000 for infants born prior to 32 weeks gestation.
These kinds of costs can break a family and the Wilkinsons are now a party of 6. Anything you can give to help offset these costs for Cora and her family is appreciated.
