Help OGHS Model UN Compete at Duke!

Hey everyone,

My name is Mirielle Burke and I am the faculty advisor for OGHS Model United Nations club. Due to the pandemic, we haven't had much opportunity to compete at the level that our delegates are capable of for a couple years. We were able to compete at App State in the fall and took home awards in every single committee we participated, seven in all. This is a commendable feat even for a more experienced group. Not only are these students' good at this, but they also love Model UN.

For those of you unfamiliar with our club, Model United Nations is an extra-curricular activity in which students act as delegates to the United Nations, simulate UN committees, and debate solutions to real-world problems. This activity takes place at MUN conferences, where we can compete with other schools and win awards. This involves substantial research, public speaking, debating, and writing skills, as well as critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership abilities. Model UN teaches skills that these students can use in all areas of their lives.

This spring, we have the opportunity to participate in the Duke University Model UN Conference and further build on our young program's success. However, the cost of this trip is expensive. Money should not be a barrier to entry when it comes to educational opportunities. Unfortunately, the cost of this trip is a barrier to some of our students.

I ask of you personally, as my birthday wish and with any holiday-giving spirit you may still have, that you consider donating to fund these students so that all may be able to participate. With your donation, you will be helping students to better their skills with an opportunity they otherwise would not have. We are presently fundraising within the school and in our community, maybe you've seen us fundraising already! But, again, this trip is quite expensive and every dollar counts. With your donation, you will receive a thank you note from our club and the knowing that you've made a difference in a student's life. All funds will be donated directly to the OGHS Model UN Club.
