Help Oliver Get Support During Medical Crisis

Donation protected

Hi, I'm Oliver. I'm asking folks if they can help me reach $3,500 so that I can fly my long-distance partner up to see me in order to support me while I deal with medical issues. The core of my medical expenses are already covered by my insurance, thankfully. Instead, the $3,500 would go towards paying for a plane ticket & covering travel expenses, as well as paying for food (for myself and my cat Pumpkin), co-payments for medication, and covering rent and utilities from missed work. I don't have local family members or many in-town friends to help support me; flying my long-distance partner up would go a long ways towards helping me get the treatments I need and ensuring I can recover. We understand there's a good chance we won't reach our goal, but any little bit helps. Thank you.

Some background on the situation:

For the past two weeks, I've been experiencing intense lower back & flank pain, frequent urination, extreme fatigue, and low-grade fever that has gotten worse over time. My partner and I suspected a bad UTI, perhaps one that had progressed to a kidney infection. On April 6th, I went to the emergency room due to the pain worsening; while there, blood tests showed clear and obvious signs of infection. A CT scan was performed but they noted nothing abnormal. In the end, I was sent home after being told that my white blood cell count was elevated, but that nothing else was wrong with me. I was not prescribed any medications for treatment, including antibiotics.

On April 8th, I returned to the hospital because the pain had gotten worse and it was becoming difficult to breathe and move without significant pain. With a low-grade fever and my blood test results still as bad as they were, along with the worsening pain, the doctors at the emergency room that night were concerned about the possibility of sepsis. I was immediately given a IV fluids and a strong antibiotic (Ceftriaxone). The doctors double-checked the CT scan and the results from the previous day and suspected a UTI; I was prescribed Macrobid and told to come back if things had not improved in 24-48 days or my symptoms had worsened.

By April 12th, symptoms had not resolved and I was now also experiencing lower-right, intense abdominal pain in addition to chest pain and difficulty breathing. My lab work this time showed more normal readings, with red and white blood cell counts down to more normal levels. I was given a physical, reporting to the doctor I was experiencing severe pain when they pushed around my gallbladder. I was sent home with instructions to return to the emergency room if symptoms did not improve after finishing the medication I had already been prescribed and told that my symptoms were not 'cause for concern.' I was advised to follow-up with my primary care doctor for some unrelated concerns I had.

Symptoms have not improved and I've been left with more questions than answers and significant stress from repeated hospital visits. My only real option for care with pain this severe is the emergency room, as Urgent Care won't take me, and I've been rebuffed almost every time I've gone. I've consistently felt as though I have been ignored and overlooked while at the emergency room, with the results of my tests being minimized and the severity of my pain downplayed. For example, despite only having one sexual partner, I was interviewed extensively about my sexual history and given an STD test despite knowing the results would be negative (and they were). Going to the hospital to begin with is extremely difficult and emotionally exhausted due to severe PTSD related to hospitals and lack of reliable transportation. Having my partner here with me would greatly help me advocate for my needs and get me the treatments I need (whatever those may be).
